Our Mission & Story

Borteley's Authentic Ga — built by a diaspora learner, for everyone

I started learning Ga to reconnect with my family's roots — and I hit a wall.

Growing up in the UK as the child of a Ga-speaking mum, I always felt a pull towards the language. Resources do exist — but they aren't always easy to find, and many are outdated, focused only on formal grammar, or don't reflect how people actually speak Ga in daily life. There were no recordings of the warm lilt in my auntie's voice when she says "ojogbaŋŋ" (good), no guide to the playful slang used by young people in Jamestown, and no way to hear the subtle tones that change a word's meaning entirely.

So I started learning with the help of my mum and other willing participants — recording phrases as I went, sharing them on TikTok, and building a community of people who felt the same way I did.

That's why Borteley's Authentic Ga was born.

What began as a personal notebook of phrases has grown into a community-driven archive — built for and by people who love Ga. Our TikTok community @Borteleys Authentic Ga has been at the heart of this growth, with 1.5k+ followers joining us to learn, share, and celebrate our language together.

Our mission is threefold

To Preserve

We record native speakers, capturing the real sounds, rhythms, and nuances of Ga as it's spoken today — from proverbs passed down through generations to modern terms for technology and daily life.

To Share

Everything in our archive is free and accessible to everyone. Whether you're teaching your kids their first words in Ga, studying the language for personal growth, or researching West African linguistics — you'll find resources that work for you.

To Build

We're creating a space where learners and native speakers can come together — sharing corrections, contributing new phrases, and ensuring Ga remains a living, breathing language for future generations.

Collaborate with Us

We're not following a formula. We're building something authentic — and we'd love to work with brands and organisations who share our mission to celebrate and amplify Ghanaian culture.

Whether you're a cultural organisation, media company, educational platform, or brand that wants to connect your audience to Ghana in a meaningful way, let's explore what we can create together. We approach every partnership as a collaboration — no cookie-cutter solutions, just genuine partnership focused on authentic cultural representation.
